David Moyes
Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed that both Jarrad Branthwaite and Merlin Rohl will be unavailable for the upcoming match against Crystal Palace. Branthwaite, who has not yet played for the Blues this season due to a hamstring injury, and Rohl, a recent loan signing from Freiburg, who is dealing with a hip/groin issue, are both making progress but are not fit to participate in Sunday’s game.
David Moyes said: “Neither of them will be fit for the game. An injury setback suffered late in pre-season has prevented him from taking part so far, providing an opportunity for Michael Keane to have a standout start to the campaign. Rohl’s arrival paved the way for teen starlet Harrison Armstrong to leave for Preston on loan, but the 23-year-old’s impact has been hindered by his own injury.”
Moyes continued: “I always looked at Pep [Guardiola] and he always made his substitutions late in games, I didn’t think he was someone who made subs very early and I always looked at him as someone who has probably got the idea. There is a big change in football where you make subs, fresh legs, I accept all that, but there are other ways to go about it as well. I feel we’ve got a much stronger squad and bench than we have had for a long time and we are able to make changes if need be, but sometimes if there is no need to make the changes you don’t make them for changing’s sake.”
Despite the injuries, Everton has enjoyed a positive start to the season, with Moyes benefiting from a deeper squad compared to last year. The absence of Branthwaite has allowed Michael Keane to shine early in the campaign, while Rohl’s signing facilitated Harrison Armstrong’s loan move to Preston. However, Moyes expressed some frustration over missed opportunities to secure more points in recent matches.
Moyes’ approach to substitutions has also drawn attention, as he has made fewer changes than any other Premier League manager this season. He referenced Pep Guardiola’s strategy of making late substitutions, emphasizing that while fresh legs can be beneficial, sometimes maintaining the current setup is preferable. Moyes is confident in the strength of his squad and believes that changes should be made only when necessary.
