Régis Le Bris
Sunderland is set to face Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend, with both teams having much at stake. As the anticipation builds, Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris provided key updates on the squad’s fitness and strategy ahead of the crucial encounter.
Le Bris said: “Nordi is fine, he’s OK. We have no new injuries. With Romaine and Dennis, there is no definite date for their return to play. We think it will probably be a month, maybe a month and a half. With Leo and Aji it is similar. Leo is back running, with Aji there was a very small injury so he took a little step back. Probably one month for each.”
Le Bris added: “Being at Old Trafford demands strong personality and strong character. They are strong, create many chances from everywhere, direct play in behind, set pieces, with talented players. So for us the only thing we can control is our way of playing, the way we want to play this game, to face this challenge, being aware that it will be tough.”
Despite the evident difference in form between Sunderland and Manchester United, Le Bris emphasized the need for his team to elevate their performance levels. The manager acknowledged the challenging nature of playing at Old Trafford and highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong mindset and character in facing a formidable opponent like Manchester United.
In other news, Sunderland’s young left-back Ollie Bainbridge is making waves during his loan spell at South Shields. The 20-year-old, who gained senior experience with Kilmarnock last season, has been impressing at the National League North side. His promising performances have sparked discussions about a potential contract extension as he approaches the final six months of his current deal.
South Shields manager Ian Watson said: “Ollie is a talent. I went to watch him play for Sunderland against Burnley in an Under-21s game and I knew after about five minutes we needed to get him in. We’ve got incredible full-backs at the club at the minute but I knew there was a chance we were going to burn them out a little bit.”
Additionally, Sunderland defender Omar Alderete has been commended for his positive impact on the squad since his summer arrival from Getafe. Le Bris praised Alderete’s strong defensive capabilities and his influence on the team’s balance.
Le Bris said of Alderete: “He is a strong defender. He’s really calm, confident. We have different personalities in the squad and the balance is really positive. The balance in the backline as well is really positive.”
As Sunderland prepares for their upcoming match against Manchester United, the focus remains on maintaining a cohesive team dynamic and leveraging the strengths of players like Alderete and Bainbridge. The match promises to be a significant test for Sunderland as they aim to assert themselves against a challenging opponent at one of football’s most iconic venues.
