John Heitinga
Ajax’s interim manager, John Heitinga, has reaffirmed his commitment to the club’s rebuilding efforts despite recent setbacks in the Champions League. The Amsterdam-based team, currently third in the Dutch Eredivisie, has struggled in European competition, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Inter Milan and a 4-0 loss to Marseille. These results have raised questions about Heitinga’s future at the helm, especially after he stepped in as the de facto manager during the Premier League games against Newcastle and Southampton.
John Heitinga said: “No, I don’t think so. It’s fair. If you want to ask that question, then you should ask it. But I hear you’re looking for it with Davy too. We kept playing football, with courage. But we’re a team in construction. And eventually I know we’ll get it right, but that will take some time.”
Heitinga’s comments came after Dutch journalists questioned former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen about the manager’s future. Despite the heavy loss to Marseille, Heitinga remained optimistic about the team’s development and the long-term vision for Ajax.
Heitinga continued: “You’re simply playing against a very good team, the one that beat Paris Saint-Germain (1-0 in Ligue 1) last week. A team that has given Champions League lessons. We played with courage, fought, and even after being down 4-0, we kept fighting. I’m definitely sticking to my plan. We’re trying to play with courage. I see them every day. You only see them under the four floodlights. In football, you can make a mistake. Only in the Eredivisie are they not punished, but here they are. We want to get back to Champions League level, but we have to grow in that area.”
Heitinga’s resolve to maintain his strategic approach underscores his belief in the team’s potential. While Ajax has faced challenges in adapting to the high demands of the Champions League, the manager is focused on fostering growth and resilience within the squad. The club’s current position in the Eredivisie, just four points behind leaders Feyenoord, reflects the ongoing process of development and adaptation under Heitinga’s guidance.
As Ajax continues its campaign, both domestically and in Europe, Heitinga’s leadership will be crucial in navigating the challenges ahead. The manager’s commitment to a long-term vision for the club remains steadfast, as he aims to restore Ajax to its former glory on the European stage.
