Nottingham Forest suffered a controversial defeat at the hands of Sunderland at the City Ground, as a contentious free-kick decision led to the decisive goal. The incident occurred when Forest’s Nicolas Dominguez was adjudged to have simulated a foul in a 50-50 challenge with Trai Hume. Referee Tony Harrington awarded the free-kick to Sunderland and booked Dominguez for simulation. From the resulting set piece, Granit Xhaka delivered the ball into the box, where Omar Alderete headed past Matz Sels to secure the victory for the visitors.
Bothroyd said: “I don’t think the players knew what it was for. I don’t think it should even be a free-kick. It should have been play on. They’re both trying to get the ball. The players on the field are looking around to say: ‘Who is the free-kick for?’ That’s a poor decision. It’s one of those soft decisions and I don’t want to see that in football. That’s why people look at football at times and say the game has gone. No one will be able to see your personal information and you will only receive messages from the NottinghamshireLive Reds writers. Just let the game play. I actually think two players challenge for the ball and, for me, just leave it alone. I wouldn’t side with either. Just leave it alone and I think it goes away, and then of course it ramps up because they then score from the free-kick.”
Neco Williams said: “We should have defended it better but at the same time, I’ve never seen a ref give one of those free-kicks before in all my time of playing football. Their player had two arms round my waist and that played a key factor in their goal. It is two poor decisions, especially by the referee, and then the people on VAR. It’s a tough one to take. It was a game where we just didn’t finish off our chances. We created many chances but just couldn’t put it to bed.”
The decision by referee Tony Harrington has sparked significant debate, with many questioning the validity of the free-kick. The incident highlights the ongoing discussions about officiating standards and the role of VAR in the Premier League. Bothroyd’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among fans and pundits who feel that such decisions detract from the flow of the game. Meanwhile, Neco Williams’ frustration underscores the impact of the decision on the team’s performance, as Forest failed to capitalize on their numerous chances.
The match result leaves Nottingham Forest contemplating what might have been, as they look to bounce back in their upcoming fixtures. The incident serves as a reminder of the fine margins in football and the critical role that officiating decisions can play in determining the outcome of a match.
