Everton’s recent performances have highlighted a strategic rotation in their lineup, particularly in the defensive department. Manager David Moyes has opted to give Barry and Beto a half each in the last two matches, against Liverpool and Wolves, to optimize their defensive capabilities. This tactical decision has been crucial in maintaining stability at the back, with Michael Keane and James Tarkowski forming a solid partnership.
The centre-back said: “I think Thierno just needs that first goal, it would help him massively. We’ve seen glimpses of what he’s about in training and what he can bring to the team with his power and his finishing, and he can also be very difficult to play against. He’s shown that in some of the Premier League games he’s played, but a goal will help him. Like any striker, when you’re not scoring, it can be tough, sometimes all you need is a tap-in, your fortunes can change and you feel more confident.”
He continued: “I think he’s settled in well. Tyler is a young lad but you can see in training the quality that he’s got. He’s got a lot of ability, and I’ve got no doubts he’ll be a top player for this football club. I don’t think he had a great pre-season, he didn’t play a lot of matches, because of the move. He’s probably not where he wants to be fitness-wise and in terms of his sharpness, so it’s difficult. But he’s got to work on that in training and has to learn every day from the players who are in the side ahead of him and hopefully when he gets his chance, he’s ready to take it.”
Keane said: “I think the relationship is good. I’ve known Tarky a long time and we’ve always got on really well. To have that kind of relationship off the pitch helps when you step on the pitch. We’re always talking to each other and help each other out. I think we’ve defended really well together this season. There have been a few games where we have conceded two goals, but I also don’t think we’ve been cut open a lot – I feel like we’ve been punished a little bit with the chances that we have given away. We’re also aware that we need to get back to clean sheets and that’s the big thing that’s going to help us win more matches. Tarky has been really good, and I’ve enjoyed playing alongside him.”
Michael Keane’s consistent presence on the pitch, with 630 minutes played this season, underscores his pivotal role in Everton’s defense. With Jarrad Branthwaite sidelined due to injury, Keane has been a constant figure, nearing a significant milestone of matching Neville Southall’s Premier League appearance record for the club. Alongside him, James Tarkowski has been a reliable partner, with the duo’s history at Burnley contributing to their seamless collaboration at Everton.
The Mancunian pair’s understanding extends beyond the pitch, fostering a robust defensive line that has been crucial in Everton’s campaign. Despite some setbacks in maintaining clean sheets, Keane and Tarkowski’s partnership remains a cornerstone for the team’s defensive strategy. Their mutual understanding and communication have been instrumental in their ability to mitigate threats and maintain composure under pressure.
As Everton aims to solidify their defensive record, the focus remains on achieving more clean sheets, a target that Keane believes will be pivotal in securing victories. With Tarkowski’s impressive form and Keane’s leadership, Everton’s defense looks poised to tackle the challenges ahead.
