Sunderland secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground, marking their third win of the Premier League season. The Black Cats’ triumph was sealed by Omar Alderete’s first-half goal, bringing their total to 11 points from six games. Alan Shearer, analyzing the match on Match of the Day, commended Sunderland’s defensive resilience, despite expressing concerns over the free kick that led to the decisive goal. Nottingham Forest’s Nicolas Dominguez was penalized for simulation, a decision that drew criticism from manager Ange Postecoglou.
Alan Shearer said: “I thought it was a bit harsh, and very harsh to give him a yellow card. Having said all that, they get the free kick and then work it extremely well. They work it well, a fantastic ball in, a really good run and that’s what wins the game. As well as everyone putting a right shift in for their manager and for the away wins. When they did go through the Sunderland defence, Roefs was the big difference again. He made some really, really important saves because Forest were putting pressure on.”
Nottingham Forest’s defender Neco Williams expressed his dissatisfaction with the referee’s decision, claiming a foul in the build-up to Sunderland’s goal. Williams argued that Arthur Masuaku fouled him, which played a crucial role in the goal’s legitimacy.
Neco Williams said: “It’s a tough one to take. It was a game where we just didn’t finish off our chances. We created many chances but just couldn’t put it to bed. We should have defended the free-kick better but, at the same time, I’ve never seen a referee give one of those free-kicks before in all my time of playing football. He had two arms around my waist and that played a key factor in their goal. It is two poor decisions, especially by the referee and then the people on VAR. We kept going until the end. They didn’t create many chances, we created many but the end product just wasn’t there. We couldn’t put our finishes to bed so it was just one of those games. We are working hard in training. We will get there but it’s just about getting that first win.”
The match highlighted Sunderland’s ability to withstand pressure and capitalize on set-piece opportunities, a testament to their defensive discipline and tactical execution. Despite Nottingham Forest’s numerous attempts, they struggled to convert chances into goals, underscoring their need for clinical finishing. The contentious free kick decision and subsequent goal remain talking points, with Forest seeking to improve their form and secure their first win of the season.
