Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has highlighted the significant improvement in Jeremy Doku’s game, particularly in how the winger handles being marked out by opposition teams. Doku’s recent performance, including an assist in City’s 5-1 victory over Burnley, showcased his evolving ability to navigate tight defensive setups and contribute effectively to the team’s attacking play.
Pep Guardiola said: “I ask the wingers in the final third to go 1vs 1 or 1vs2 and I have the feeling that Jeremy’s decision making in the final third improved like wow. Comparing to the past, he made an assist to Erling and sees the channels. He’s an incredible threat against teams that are a low block and deep. Jeremy is really important and when the team is transitional maybe he can struggle a bit but he had the ball and brought the opponent to the box. Now he is reading good. When Jeremy goes there for the second goal, two or three opponents go there. They don’t allow him to go 1vs1 because he’s unstoppable. There is no winger over 5-10 metres stronger than Jeremy – he can go left or right. Now he is reading when the opponents go two or three who the other man is to be free to create a cross or an extra pass. He improved a lot and the second goal is an example of that. Josko made a good cross and we are lucky that immediately Matheus made a good cross and we got the third.”
Doku’s performance against Burnley was a testament to his growing influence on the pitch. His assist for Erling Haaland was not only a crucial contribution to the scoreline but also a demonstration of his improved decision-making in the final third. This particular skill has been a focus for Guardiola, who has sought to enhance Doku’s effectiveness when faced with multiple defenders.
The Belgian winger’s ability to disrupt defensive lines with his pace and dribbling has been a consistent asset for City. However, Guardiola’s emphasis on Doku’s tactical awareness has begun to pay dividends, as evidenced by his recent form. With three assists in his last three league appearances, Doku is making a compelling case to retain his spot in the starting lineup.
The development of Doku’s game is a promising sign for Manchester City, as they look to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League. His ability to adapt and improve under Guardiola’s guidance is a reflection of the team’s broader strategy to refine individual talents for collective success.
