The Liverpool boss was keen to prove to the premiership and the watching world that English football was amongst world’s best despite England failing to secure world cup birth with a loss to Holland that midweek. Souness was desperate to claim three long-awaited points against Oldham and wanted to do so in style.
Graeme Souness said “Lets put away the doom and the gloom and pictures of exit signs. Football will be the greatest game there is for another hundred years. Our priority is to get three points tomorrow but we must do so in the right way. I saw Oldham play Manchester City and they deserved to win. It was only a late equalizer that got City a point. They are a team who are always involved in exciting matches and I’m sure tomorrow will be no different.”
