Enzo Fernandez
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has once again addressed the racism scandal that emerged in July 2024, involving him and his Argentina teammates. The incident, which took place on a team bus after their Copa America victory over Colombia, saw the players chanting offensive slurs about the French team. Fernandez later issued an apology, emphasizing that the video did not represent his beliefs or character. In a recent interview, he revealed the steps he took to mend his relationship with his teammates and restore harmony within the squad.
Enzo Fernandez said: “I remember that period and what happened. It was a really hard time for me personally and I suffered during it. I’ve always understood my teammates’ position, so the first thing I did was to phone them and tell them I wasn’t going to go on holiday because I wanted to travel back to speak to them in person to tell them what sort of guy I am and about my values. It all fizzled out and there’s now very good harmony in the dressing room.”
Fernandez continued: “I called them while I was away. And then I cut my holiday short and travelled to where the team was for pre-season in America. The first thing I did when I arrived was to go and speak with them to apologise in person.”
He added: “Yes, absolutely. It was a tough time, but my teammates understood me. It was a euphoric moment in which I didn’t want to hurt anyone. It was just a song that we sing in Argentina as part of ‘football folklore’, which is what we call it.”
Fernandez’s decision to end his summer vacation early and apologize in person highlights his commitment to addressing the issue head-on. The incident occurred during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in the United States, under the new management of Enzo Maresca. By taking immediate action, Fernandez aimed to demonstrate his sincerity and reinforce his values to his teammates.
The scandal, while challenging, ultimately served to strengthen Fernandez’s bond with the squad. His proactive approach in dealing with the situation and his willingness to engage in open dialogue with his teammates were instrumental in restoring trust and unity within the team. Fernandez’s experience underscores the importance of accountability and communication in overcoming misunderstandings and fostering a positive team environment.
