Jude Bellingham is currently facing a challenge to reclaim his spot in the England national team lineup, as Morgan Rogers continues to impress. Bellingham was left on the bench during England’s recent match against Serbia, sparking discussions about his role in the squad. England manager Thomas Tuchel emphasized the importance of team unity and the role of substitutes in maintaining a cohesive and supportive environment.
Thomas Tuchel said: “You can be angry at the coach, you can be angry at the situation, but if you see the nations that win, see the clubs that win the Champions League, then the bench is on their feet. For the last eight-10 minutes there was no-one sat there thinking: ‘I should be on the field, I should be on the field, why am I not there?’ They are just there. This makes the difference in the end and I strongly, strongly believe we should arrive with a team like that. Even if they are disappointed, which is absolutely normal. They will never be happy, they don’t have to be happy, no one is used to sitting on the bench, this is the nature of a strong national team.”
Despite being left out of the starting XI, Bellingham showed no issues and contributed significantly after coming on in the second half. Tuchel explained the rationale behind his decision, highlighting the need to maintain team dynamics and capitalize on Morgan Rogers’ recent performances.
Tuchel stated: “It was no problem at all. I explained it to him before the team meeting. He came on and played good, good, straight away with all the force and right energy and full of quality up front. We have had three fantastic performances with Morgan so one of the reasons was to keep him in this position. But we knew we would suffer from ball possession from Serbia so we thought once we have clear information, it could be nicer for Jude to play in the second half and these were the decisions.”
Bellingham is expected to have an opportunity to start in England’s upcoming match against Albania, as the team concludes its World Cup qualifying campaign with their place in the tournament already secured. The young midfielder has been left out of the last two squads but remains patient, awaiting his chance to make an impact from the start. The decision to keep Rogers in the starting lineup reflects Tuchel’s strategic approach, balancing individual performances with overall team cohesion.
As England prepares for their final qualifying match, the focus will be on maintaining the momentum and ensuring that all players, whether starting or on the bench, contribute to the team’s success. Bellingham’s situation highlights the competitive nature of international football, where even established players must continuously prove their worth to secure a place in the starting XI.
