Roy Keane Manchester United
Roy Keane, the former Manchester United midfielder, has been a prominent figure in football punditry, working with Sky Sports and ITV Sport, and making regular appearances on Gary Neville’s podcast, The Overlap. Despite his successful media career, Keane has not completely dismissed the possibility of returning to management. Recently, he was interviewed by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) for the national team manager position before Heimir Hallgrimsson’s appointment. Keane’s history with the Republic of Ireland includes a stint as assistant coach under Martin O’Neill from 2013 to 2018. His potential return to management, particularly with Ireland, remains a topic of discussion among football circles.
Bryan Robson said: “Roy’s a determined character and if he fancies going back into management, then I’m sure the Republic of Ireland would definitely look at him because he knows the game and he’s got a lot of experience. The only thing I’d say about the Republic of Ireland at the moment is, when I played against them, they had a hell of a lot of really good players. They’ve got a few decent players at the moment, but in strength, the squad isn’t that strong. So it’ll be a tough job if Roy does go back into managing that.”
Bryan Robson continued: “I would doubt it very much,” he told OLBG when asked if Keane would be the next Republic of Ireland manager. “However, as I’m getting older and he is enjoying himself in life, seems to be, know, he’s doing all his punditry to work and getting adverts on TV and things like this here. So I’m quite sure he’s probably not thinking about going into management. But if he did and asked me along as the assistant, you know, to have a little cigarette mainly… or as a chief scout for him living down in southern Italy. Yes, I’ll take that. I’ll take that all day long.”
Keane’s potential return to management, particularly with the Republic of Ireland, presents both opportunities and challenges. The current squad lacks the depth and strength of previous generations, making the managerial role a demanding one. However, Keane’s extensive experience and understanding of the game could provide the leadership needed to rejuvenate the team. While his current focus appears to be on his punditry career, the allure of management may still hold a place in his future aspirations. The decision ultimately rests with Keane, who seems to be enjoying his current role in the media spotlight.
