Guglielmo Vicario
Guglielmo Vicario, the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, recently emphasized the critical role of set pieces in football while on international duty with Italy. His comments align with the views of his club manager, Thomas Frank, who has long advocated for the strategic use of set pieces. Italy has faced difficulties in defending set pieces, narrowly defeating Israel 5-4 in a recent World Cup qualifying match under Gennaro Gattuso. Vicario and Destiny Udogie were not utilized in Italy’s subsequent 3-1 victory over Estonia, but the goalkeeper addressed the set piece challenges prior to the match.
Guglielmo Vicario said: “Football requires great concentration now, when attacking and defending. We know that many goals are scored from set plays nowadays, so we have been working on those details to improve. Perhaps mentality is the most fundamental thing of all. The lads want to participate, stick together, and we always proved that. This is a group of good guys who care about the Nazionale, and we want to show that to everyone.”
Thomas Frank said: “I personally think that set-pieces are an extremely important part of football. Isn’t there a stat that 33 per cent or something like that that all goals are scored from set-pieces? So I think it’s clever to utilise a third of your opportunities to try to score a goal. If you think that’s a strength of ours, I’m happy with that.”
Thomas Frank added: “We have specific principles and also specific routines. No doubt about that. I think it’s very important, open play and set-pieces. It’s very important to have those principles in place and then tweak them a little bit towards the opponent, depending on their system, how they defend, let’s say corners or wide free kicks. Then we can tweak it a little bit. But we can’t change it too much because then we need to be consistent in the messages.”
Vicario’s comments underscore the growing recognition of set pieces as a vital component of modern football. His remarks reflect a shared understanding within the Italian squad of the need to enhance their defensive strategies in this area. Meanwhile, Thomas Frank’s insights reveal a methodical approach to set pieces at Tottenham, where he collaborates with set piece coach Andreas Georgson to adapt their tactics based on opponents’ defensive setups. This strategic emphasis on set pieces is seen as a means to capitalize on scoring opportunities, with Frank highlighting that a significant portion of goals in football originate from such situations.
In conclusion, both Vicario and Frank’s perspectives highlight a broader trend in football where set pieces are increasingly viewed as pivotal to both offensive and defensive play. As Italy works to address its defensive vulnerabilities, the insights from these football figures may prove instrumental in shaping their approach to future matches.
