Archie Gray, the 19-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, has been hailed by his manager Thomas Frank as having the potential to reach the heights of Premier League superstars Rodri and Declan Rice. Gray, who joined Tottenham from Leeds United for £40 million 15 months ago, has quickly become a key player for Spurs, showcasing his versatility across various positions. As he prepares to face his former club, Gray’s development under Frank’s guidance has been a focal point of discussion.
Thomas Frank said: “Let’s put it this way, yes we spoke with him, but he ended up at Tottenham and maybe that was good because I still have the chance to work with him! It’s one of those things. No matter where you are and what club you’re in, sometimes you go for targets and you can’t make it for whatever reason. What I am happy with is what I see from Archie here and I believe he’s got a big future ahead.”
Frank continued: “I see him as a midfielder who can play six or eight. You need to be a little bit of a six, a little bit of eight and 10 and two of the best in the world right now are probably Rodri and Declan Rice. They can do a little bit of everything.”
Gray’s journey at Tottenham has been marked by significant milestones, including his Champions League debut against Bodo/Glimt, where he played a crucial role in helping Spurs secure a point. Frank’s belief in Gray’s potential is further bolstered by the player’s football lineage, as he is the great-nephew of Leeds legend Eddie Gray. This familial connection, according to Frank, contributes to Gray’s understanding of the game and his work ethic.
Frank added: “You can say that sometimes there is something they maybe have got a little bit more in with the blood, which I think Archie has got, he seems to understand that he needs to work hard. The foundation, if you want to achieve anything, you need to do that. I think his understanding of the game is good as well.”
As Tottenham prepares to face Leeds United, Gray is expected to play a vital role in breaking the club’s international break curse, having lost their past seven matches before such breaks. Frank humorously acknowledged this statistic while emphasizing the importance of focus and mentality in overcoming it.
Frank joked: “We have a fantastic stat on that and we performed absolutely top in that game! I really, really do hope we win so we don’t need to speak too much about it in the future.”
Meanwhile, Tottenham faces challenges with injuries, as deadline day loan signing Randal Kolo Muani remains unavailable due to a recent injury. Frank explained the situation and highlighted the efforts of the medical team in managing player fitness, particularly with Richarlison, who has been battling injuries.
Frank explained: “It’s just a dead leg that was bleeding too much. Very simple. That’s sorted. Now we need to get him up to pace.”
He added: “No. I would say the medical and performance department have done a top job in terms of building him. I think it’s quite remarkable that he’s fit with his history.”
As Gray continues to develop under Frank’s guidance, the Tottenham manager remains optimistic about the young midfielder’s future and his role in the team’s journey forward.
