Roy Keane had to do it all by himself that year on and off the pitch. He literally had to carry a struggling Nottingham Forest on his own for a year, negotiate a new contract for himself as he had no agent and then got a release clause inserted in case Forest went down. Then he also had to choose between the riches of clubs across Europe to choose from. In one of his first interviews since moving to Manchester United, the Irishman revealed how money wasn’t the main factor he looked at when deciding his next destination. Keane, in fact, took a £3000 pay cut to join the Red Devils.
Roy Keane said “Money is not the most important thing. It’s a career opportunity. And right now, United offers much more in that line. I get a lot of advice with regards to getting married and settling down but I don’t have that kind of time right now. I am too busy with United and the Republic. In fact, I don’t even have a steady girlfriend.”
