James McAtee

At 21, James McAtee finds himself at a crucial juncture in his football career. Having debuted for Manchester City more than three years ago, McAtee has spent the last two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, which provided him with substantial playing time and experience. Now back at Manchester City, he is eager to secure his place under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola. Despite receiving offers for both loan and permanent moves, McAtee remains committed to his boyhood club, recognizing this as possibly his final opportunity to prove himself. In an effort to enhance his play, McAtee has transitioned from a wide position to a more central role, which has sharpened his abilities on the field. His hard work recently bore fruit when he scored against Slovan Bratislava, contributing to a Manchester City victory. Throughout his journey, his family, particularly his brother John, who plays for Bolton, has been a pillar of support. Additionally, McAtee values Guardiola’s faith in his talent, which bolsters his focus and motivation, particularly when his playing time is limited.

McAtee on his adaptation and position change at Manchester City

“It is hard. But I have to keep on doing what I’m doing, keep my head down and keep up with the lads as much as I can. I definitely think I’m sharper. Last year I was playing a bit wider, now I’m more central. I’m getting to grips with that like I used to. I am sharper and feel better now than I did two months ago.”

McAtee’s strategy for handling limited playing time

“When I’m going out there now it’s not as chaotic. For example, Watford I hadn’t played for a while and it was a bit chaotic at the start. I’m just being patient, waiting for my chance and grabbing it when I do get it.”

Pep Guardiola’s advice to McAtee, as relayed by the player

“Basically he’s telling me to go and have fun. A bit more tactical but go and be myself and feel good about myself.”
