15 months after Chriss Waddle’s move to Sheffield Wednesday he spoke about the reason why he did not go to Newcastle upon his return to England from Marseille. And the reason was that despite all the interest shown by the Tyneside club they never asked Waddle to come to St James’ Park. Waddle had earlier signed a seven-year deal at Tottenham but moved to France just three years into his time at the North London Club.
Chris Waddle said “I wasn’t offered the chance to come back to Newcastle United. Yes, I met the directors but there was nothing concrete and they never rang me back. You never ever know what is going to happen in football these days. I signed a seven-year contract at Spurs and I was playing in France three years later. When I was at Newcastle earlier, I was very raw and I tried to do the impossible and I suppose it looked good when it came off. But I have learned over the years and I suppose I am more consistent now. In any case, starting with my last two seasons at St James Park, I have always been happy with my form”
