As the 1992-93 title was about to be wrapped up, Alex Ferguson finally opened up about the dreaded final few weeks a season earlier where Manchester United lost its way and finally lost the title to Leeds when the lost against Liverpool at Anfield.
Alex Ferguson said “I learned something that day, something I had not come across before, despite being a manager for 18 years. I have won plenty of things in my time and I’ve lost big games as well, but I have never come across a situation we had in closing weeks of that season. Our failure seemed to make a lot of people very happy. I don’t want people to weep crocodile tears for us, but I find it difficult to understand why rivals should take so much satisfaction from someone’s downfall. It is bitter and twisted.”
Ferguson admitted that he had to ask himself at the start of that season whether he could put himself and his family through the torment of chasing a title that had eluded United for 26 years.
Alex Ferguson said “They drained my wife, Cathy as well and our house was like a morgue at the end of it all.”
