West Ham had started that season as one of the favourites to go back down but their perfomances were anything but of a team that was battling relegation. They played superbly against Norwich side who still looked hungover after their European win over Bayern Munich earlier that week. Had the referee not denied them a clear penalty from Rob Newman’s foul on Trevor Morley, the Hammers could have taken all three points back home. West Ham manager,

Billy Bonds said ‘‘I am delighted with what was an excellent perfomance. We created the better chances and could have nicked all three points. It was definitely a foul, Morley dragged the defender about 10 yards.’’

Norwich manager

Mike Walker said ‘‘ We were a bit lucky. It looked as though it was a foul’’
