Leeds dent a big blow in Arsenal’s title challenge with a demolishing 3-0 victory

Leeds ended their barren run in real style beating a surprisingly poor Arsenal side convincingly as the scoreline suggested. The loss of David Seaman with a hip injury summed up the London side’s day and they departed with hardly a shot fired in anger. Leeds had many chances in the first half to go ahead but finally only managed to get their noses in front through a Chris Fairclough strike just after 50 minutes, two more goals from Lee Chapman and Gary McAllister gave 1991 champions a comfortable victory and crucial three points against a side that had their own ideas of winning the premier league.

Manchester City get all three points in a thrilling five-goal game at Coventry

On-loan striker Mick Quinn celebrated his Coventry debut by giving them a 12th minute lead against Manchester City. Terry Phelan totally mishit a back pass and the new signing ran on to cooly sidefoot under goalkeeper Tony Coton. The visitors did not lie down, however, and Mike Sheron headed home from six yards when completely unmarked to give them some hope but they went down fighting in the end as City took all three points.

Crystal Palace only manage a point against Struggling Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace broke the deadlock in 23rd minute after Eddie McGoldrick tried to find Chris Armstrong with a forward pass. His effort was wayward but a forest leg luckily deflected the ball straight into the path of the former Millwall striker, who advanced through the middle to cooly crack a low drive past Crossley and into the corner and the net. Struggling Forest did get a point out of the game when Garry Bannister secured an equaliser six minutes before the end.

Manchester United get back into goals with a 3-0 thumping of Oldham

Manchester United’s beleaguered attack force of Brian McClair and Mark Hughes ended their goal-scoring drought in dramatic style against Oldham. United, who had not found the net in four previous games, overwhelmed Oldham with a three-goal salvo in the opening half an hour as their lead strikers’ pair responded to that week’s attempts by their manager Alex Ferguson to purchase England and Sheffield Wednesday striker David Hirst. This was United’s first victory since September 12.

Spurs and Villa battle it out for a point in an entertaining match

Deadlock prevailed in a game that promised much but in the end produced little, Aston Villa gave plenty of evidence they are going to be in the frame when the chase for the Premier League title hots up. They possessed a gritty midfield bolstered by Irish players Steve Staunton and Ray Houghton, and two strikers of class in Dean Saunders and Dalian Atkinson But the pair had a lean day at White Hart Lane against this much improved Spurs side which had not conceded a goal in four successive games.
