In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.
Thursday papers covered Liverpool Manager Graeme Souness’s interest in FC Copenhagen centre back Torben Piechnik, Manchester City’s interest in the Dutch international Eric Viscaal, relief for Manchester United over the status of “Foreign” players and growing concern over the introduction of the new Premier League concept of the top flight as well as news on Liverpool stars Steve Nicole and Paul Stewart ahead of Reds’ trip to Sheffield United.
Sources in Denmark reported that the Liverpool boss Graeme Souness was tracking the FC Copenhagen defender Torben Piechnik. Souness watched the 29 year old perform well in the Danish Capital the previous night despite Denmark losing 2-1 to world champions Germany in a friendly. The Reds’ chief was set to recoup £2.3m from Aston Villa as Wales striker Saunders arrived in the Midlands to complete the formalities of a transfer which had dragged on for over a week.

Manchester City were reported to be interested in the race for £1million Dutch international Eric Viscaal. The 24-year-old Viscaal, keen to extend his playing experience beyond the Belgian first devision, was looking for a move from AA Ghent. Newcastle United from Barclays league one were also reportedly interested in the player.
In other news that delighted the Liverpool fans, hamstring victims Steve Nicol and Paul Stewart were set to be available for Reds’ Saturday’s trip to Sheffield United, while Saunders’ striking role could be taken by Ronny Rosenthal was set to be promoted as the main striker after Dean Saunders departure to Aston Villa.

Premier League – General
Manchester United were set to benefit with the new Football Association rules because Ryan Giggs, Dennis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore and Alex Ferguson’s own son Darren Ferguson, all lost their “Foreign Tag”. According to the original news they would have been grouped with the foreign contingent, leaving Alex Feguson a difficult choice, especially in UEFA competitions, the news from the FA confirmed that the players involved met the demands of at least five years within playing within the national association, at least two of them at youth level.

Media reports suggested growing frustration and bewilderment amongst the general public by the whole concept of the Premier League, which seemed to have brought nothing but trouble since it was introduced at the start of the season. It was obviously not about improving standards of play, since the number of games played remains exactly the same, and it seemed it was not even about giving the leading clubs freedom to negotiate their own deals. The question arose again as soon as the league agreed to a £13million sponsorship deal with Bass, which was overthrown by a group of eight clubs acting in their own interests, exactly as influential lobbying groups used to overturn previous reforms aimed at improving the old Football League.Pressure was mounting on David Mellor, minister in the current government and the brain behind the new Premier League model to take corrective measures.
