Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe addressed the media following his team’s impressive victory over Everton, shedding light on the absence of goalkeeper Nick Pope and the performance of Aaron Ramsdale, who stepped in for his first Premier League start of the season. Howe also discussed the team’s aspirations for a top-five finish in the league.
Eddie Howe said: “Good try! That is something for me to know. We are disappointed to lose him (Pope). We can’t afford to lose any player. He suffered an injury just towards the end of training. I did not name the team until yesterday. So we were just training as normal, he was wrong-footed on a shot and felt something in his groin, more after training than in that moment, and we hope he is not out for long. We need him back. He will have a scan in the next few days to find the damage.”
Howe’s comments highlighted the unexpected nature of Pope’s injury, which occurred during a routine training session. The manager expressed hope that the injury would not sideline Pope for an extended period, emphasizing the importance of having all players available for selection as Newcastle aims to strengthen their position in the league.
Eddie Howe said: “Nick and Aaron are very different goalkeepers. They have very different strengths. They are still very effective. Aaron showed the qualities with his feet today and distributed the ball very well. He was not overly worked in terms of shots. What he did have he handled it well. I don’t think he could have done much with the goal. It is a good day for him and the back four in front of him, a good day for the team in general.”
Ramsdale’s performance was a focal point of Howe’s post-match analysis. The manager praised Ramsdale’s ability to distribute the ball and his overall composure during the match. Despite conceding a goal, Howe believed Ramsdale could not have done much to prevent it, and he commended both the goalkeeper and the defensive line for their solid display.
Eddie Howe said: “We’ve got a lot of work to do, obviously, to consistently say that we’ve solved some of the issues that we’ve had, but it’s a step forward and that’s a big moment for us, confidence-wise. For the general feeling, back-to-back wins in the Premier League, that will help us to no end. Now we have two home games that we need to try and capitalise.”
Howe’s remarks also touched upon Newcastle’s broader ambitions. The manager acknowledged the team’s need for continued improvement but was optimistic about the confidence boost provided by consecutive Premier League victories. With two upcoming home games, Howe emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum to capitalize on these opportunities and push towards a top-five finish.
As Newcastle United navigates the challenges of the Premier League season, Howe’s insights underscore the team’s determination to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. The manager’s focus on player recovery, tactical adjustments, and seizing opportunities reflects a strategic approach aimed at sustaining the club’s upward trajectory.
