Conor Gallagher
Manchester United are reportedly considering Conor Gallagher as a potential midfield reinforcement, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba being their primary target. However, the hefty £100 million price tag placed on Baleba by Brighton could steer United towards Gallagher, who is seen as a more financially viable option. Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has indicated that Atletico Madrid might entertain offers for Gallagher around £52 million. Former Scottish international Pat Nevin has expressed that Gallagher would not only be a strong acquisition for United but also a valuable asset for club captain Bruno Fernandes.
Pat Nevin said: “I think Conor Gallagher would be great at Man Utd, in my opinion. Gallagher can play a number of positions. Remember Gallagher can play in a 3-4-2-1 formation. It wouldn’t be the best as one of the wing-backs, but as one of the two in the central four. Playing in a more defensive place. The energy levels that Connor’s got would be perfect which again makes you ask why they sold Scott McTominay. But the other thing about Connor, if you actually have to play him one further forward, there are very few in the game that are better in a high-pressing game. There are very few in football that can do better than him. He’s brilliantly suited to the English game. If Manchester United have had a problem for quite some time, one of the biggest problems they’ve had is energy in midfield. With the best will in the world, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen were lovely players, fantastic world-class players, but they didn’t have legs by the end. Certainly Casemiro still hasn’t got the legs to do that three games a week. That’s clear, that’s obvious. So you need somebody in there who’s got that. I would be looking at those central positions, to be honest.”
Gallagher, who began his football journey at Chelsea’s academy, spent several seasons on loan at clubs including Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Brom, and Crystal Palace before securing a regular spot in Chelsea’s Premier League squad. Despite his progress, Gallagher moved to Atletico Madrid after being informed by manager Enzo Maresca that he wouldn’t be a regular starter. Following his first complete season in Spain, Gallagher is now being linked with a swift return to the Premier League, potentially with Manchester United.
The potential acquisition of Gallagher could address United’s ongoing midfield energy concerns, especially given the aging legs of current midfielders Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. Gallagher’s versatility and high-energy style of play could provide the dynamism United have been lacking in the middle of the park.
