Liverpool’s Carabao Cup journey came to an abrupt halt as they suffered a 3-0 defeat against Crystal Palace, prompting manager Arne Slot to reflect on the squad depth disparities between Liverpool and their Premier League rivals, Manchester City and Chelsea. Despite Liverpool’s substantial summer spending, Slot suggested that the depth of his squad still lags behind.
Slot said: “Before I went out I saw City’s line-up and I don’t think they had one starter from the weekend, but it felt as if you looked at their line-up that they played with 11 starters. Maybe it also gives a little bit of insight that everybody has always said how big of a squad we are having. When we played Chelsea, I said they are missing eight but they can still bring Estevao in. We are only missing four players at the moment and already we needed to start with four players under the age of 19 and after I made two substitutions we were on six.”
Slot’s comments came after Liverpool fielded a youthful side against Crystal Palace, which was unable to withstand the pressure from the Eagles. This comes in stark contrast to Manchester City, who made ten changes for their Carabao Cup tie yet still managed to secure a 3-1 victory over Swansea City. City’s squad included young talent Divine Mukasa, but was otherwise composed of seasoned players, highlighting their depth.
Slot added: “It’s the same squad depth as last season. Right now we have less injuries but the depth is similar to last season. We miss nothing.”
Despite Liverpool’s record-breaking £400 million summer expenditure, Slot’s remarks underscore the ongoing challenge of competing with the squad depth of Manchester City and Chelsea. The defeat to Crystal Palace serves as a reminder of the work still needed to bolster Liverpool’s squad to the level of their rivals.
