Harvey Elliott
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has clarified the reasons behind Harvey Elliott’s exclusion from the squad in their recent Premier League clash against Manchester City. Despite Villa securing a notable victory, Elliott’s absence was a significant talking point among fans and pundits alike.
Unai Emery said: “I explained it two days ago in the press conference. He is training well, and he played some matches, but the performances weren’t what we needed. Some players are playing as a number 10, and they are playing well, like Buendia and Rogers, also Ross Barkley after he was out. In the squad today we needed to take one player out, and I decided for him. I am happy with him. He is training good. His commitment is fantastic and he is a good guy. Only tactical decision.”
Emery added: “I spoke with him about it. My advice was to keep going, and training and when it is his opportunity, to play well. He is a very good player. Our demands are in the high level. Some players, they performed in the same position last year and this year. He needs time to work and wait for his moment.”
Elliott’s exclusion was primarily a tactical decision, as Emery highlighted the strong performances of other players in similar positions. Emi Buendía and Jake Rogers have been particularly effective, and Ross Barkley’s return to form further complicated Elliott’s inclusion. Emery emphasized that Elliott’s training and commitment have been commendable, and he remains a valuable asset to the team. The manager’s advice to Elliott was to remain patient and continue working hard, as his opportunity will eventually come.
Aston Villa’s victory over Manchester City marked their fourth consecutive Premier League win, with Matty Cash scoring the decisive goal. The win was a testament to Villa’s growing strength and consistency under Emery’s management. The tactical decision to leave Elliott out reflects the competitive nature of the squad and the high standards set by the manager.
As Villa continues their campaign, Emery’s strategic squad selections will be crucial in maintaining their momentum. Elliott, despite not being part of the recent matchday squad, remains an integral part of Villa’s plans, with the potential to make significant contributions in the future.
