Jadon Sancho
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has clarified the decision to substitute Jadon Sancho during their recent win against Manchester City. Sancho, who joined Villa on loan from Manchester United, was brought on as a substitute before being taken off later in the match. Emery emphasized that this was a strategic move to manage the player’s fitness as he continues to build his match sharpness.
Unai Emery said: “It was not easy, firstly, after Sancho played 60 minutes against Go Ahead. He is getting fit, but not enough. I planned as well with him to play him in the second half, but after the injury to Buendia, I decided to get him on the field as best as possible to get minutes and fitness, using his skills and qualities. His impact was good, but I knew before that it was my plan was to sub him, and I did it before with Morgan Rogers and Emi Buendia. It was not a punishment, it was a plan – he played 45 minutes. The other sub players were ready. Malen, Maatsen and Barkley were all very good.”
Sancho replaced Emi Buendia, who appeared to suffer a foot injury after assisting Matty Cash’s decisive goal in the 19th minute. Sancho had a promising spell on the pitch, nearly scoring his first goal for Villa after a pass from Boubacar Kamara, only to be denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma. Emery’s decision to substitute Sancho with Evann Guessand in the 74th minute was part of a premeditated strategy to ensure the winger’s gradual return to full fitness.
The match saw Aston Villa adopt a deep defensive block to maintain their lead, with Emery opting for tactical substitutions to bolster the team’s resilience. Sancho’s involvement, although brief, was seen as a positive step in his ongoing adaptation to the squad’s dynamics and Emery’s tactical framework.
This strategic management of player fitness and match time reflects Emery’s broader approach to squad rotation and player development, particularly for those returning from limited playing time. Sancho’s gradual integration into the team is expected to continue as he regains full match fitness, contributing to Villa’s ongoing campaign.
