Pep Guardiola
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has provided an update on Nico Gonzalez’s condition following the midfielder’s premature exit from their recent win against Villarreal. Gonzalez suffered a ‘knock to the feet,’ and while the team is optimistic about his recovery, they will monitor his progress closely ahead of their weekend clash with Aston Villa.
Pep Guardiola said: “Nico had a knock on his feet, we will see.”
During the match, City established a two-goal lead in the first half and had opportunities to extend their advantage. However, they also allowed Villarreal to pose a threat, with Renato Veiga hitting the post late in the game after Gianluigi Donnarumma made a crucial save against Pape Gueye’s attempt.
Guardiola expressed a desire for more possession in Villarreal’s half during the second half but acknowledged Erling Haaland’s fatigue as a factor. He emphasized the importance of observing opponent movements before making decisions on the pitch. Despite a strong first half, Guardiola noted that the team needed more dynamic movement and runs behind the defense, which were lacking in the latter stages of the match.
Pep Guardiola said: “We always talk about the way you pass the ball. Always I tell them to see the movement of the opponent first. Then decide. The first half was really good. We brought the opponent there (deep) but in the second half? No.”
Guardiola highlighted specific instances where City excelled in breaking the lines but also pointed out areas needing improvement. He praised players like Rayan and Matheus for their forward momentum but stressed the need for patience and timing in attacking plays.
Pep Guardiola said: “There are actions in the second half we are incredible and break the lines and still we go back. No. Now go, attack. You don’t have to wait. Sometimes that is what we missed and why we suffered a bit more in the second half.”
With the victory, Manchester City now has seven points from three games in the Champions League. They are set to face Dortmund at home before the November international break. Fans can catch the action on the TNT Sports Prime Video channel.
Manchester City’s focus will now shift to ensuring Gonzalez’s fitness for the upcoming Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, as they aim to maintain their momentum in both domestic and European competitions.
