Jack Grealish

Paul Lambert, the former Aston Villa manager, has shared insights into Jack Grealish’s career trajectory and his recent resurgence at Everton. Lambert, who managed Aston Villa from 2012 to 2015, was instrumental in Grealish’s early career, handing him his debut as a late substitute in a Premier League match against Manchester City when Grealish was just 18 years old.
Paul Lambert said: “When I had Jack at Villa, he was only a kid. I gave him his debut when he was a kid. I’d bring him up to train with the first team and then put him back with the kids because of the physicality of it. He was obviously not fully developed at that time, but I could see his talent. Did we always see eye to eye? No. But as a talent, you could never fault him; the talent was always there.”
Grealish’s career saw a significant chapter at Manchester City, where he was part of the squad that won the continental treble in the 2022-2023 season, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. Despite this success, his role at City gradually diminished, leading to a loan move to Everton at the start of the current season, a decision aimed at rejuvenating his career. Since joining Everton, Grealish has made a notable impact, contributing one goal and four assists in just seven Premier League matches.
Paul Lambert continued: “He had a good time at Man City, but Everton has given him that freshness again. He’s not put a restriction on him and allowed him to play with freedom. I think Everton are getting the rewards from it because the way he is playing seems more focused.”
Grealish’s time at Manchester City, under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, was a period of learning and growth. However, his current form at Everton has caught the attention of fans and pundits alike, with Lambert highlighting the positive influence of Everton’s environment and fanbase on Grealish’s performance.
Paul Lambert added: “But if you ask Jack how his time at Man City was, he’d probably say he had an incredible time learning from one of the greatest managers in the modern era of football, in Pep Guardiola. I think what David’s done is give him a new environment with a different stadium and a new set of fans. The Everton fans have definitely taken to him.”
Despite being left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euro 2024 tournament, which England lost to Spain, Lambert remains optimistic about Grealish’s chances of returning to the national team. With 39 caps to his name, Grealish’s current form under Everton manager David Moyes could see him back in contention for England selection.
Paul Lambert admitted: “I think England are in a really good place at the minute with how they’re performing, so he’s going to have a fight on his hands with the other guys that aren’t in the team. If you look at Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Grealish, taking them on top of what they already have, gives them one hell of a strong squad. But he’s playing well enough to force his way back in.”
Grealish’s journey from a young talent at Villa to a seasoned player at Everton underscores his resilience and adaptability, qualities that could soon see him donning the England jersey once again.
