Nick Pope
Nick Pope, the England international goalkeeper, has been a standout performer for Newcastle United this season with a string of clean sheets in the Premier League. As the 33-year-old shifts his focus back to the Champions League, he aims for another shutout following his impressive performance against Union SG in the previous European fixture. Pope’s contract, which was extended in May after Newcastle’s qualification for the Champions League, has been a hot topic among fans. Supporters can catch the upcoming game on the TNT Sports Prime Video channel.
Nick Pope said: “I signed it in July 2023, I was really happy about it then. My contract is now up in 2027. But I am looking forward to spending as much time as I can here.”
Pope joined Newcastle United in 2022 from Burnley for £13 million and has been integral to the club’s resurgence since the Saudi-backed takeover. His contributions have been pivotal in Newcastle’s recent achievements, including securing their first trophy and qualifying for the Champions League twice. Pope expressed his enthusiasm for the club’s ongoing evolution, both on and off the pitch.
Nick Pope said: “It is ever evolving. Whether that is players, new bits around the training ground, just ourselves as a team we have evolved over time. It’s been great to be a part of it. You want to be part of it moving forward. We have that first trophy under our belt now and we have qualified for the Champions League twice. You are looking to do that back to back, can we achieve more? You are looking to get to the knockout games and win them. I’ve had some big moments and you strive for more of them.”
Reaching the Champions League knockout stages would mark a significant milestone for Newcastle, a feat the club has not achieved since the days of Sir Bobby Robson in the 2002/03 season. Pope emphasized the ambition within the squad to advance further in the competition.
Nick Pope said: “It is something this club has not done in a long time so it is a big ambition for the group. We have a top team and a top manager and top teams get in later stages of the Champions League. We have more experience than first time around so we are looking to take it to the next level.”
Newcastle’s previous Champions League campaign ended after the initial group stage, but Pope is optimistic about improving their record this season.
Nick Pope said: “The first time round we didn’t have loads of Champions League experience but now we have that as a squad and that can help us progress this time around.”
Reflecting on his personal form, Pope shared his confidence and readiness for the challenges ahead.
Nick Pope said: “I feel in a really good space myself. My body feels really good and I feel like I have built well from a good pre-season. As a team we have had some good moments and done some really good things.”
With Newcastle United aiming to make a mark in the Champions League, Pope’s leadership and experience will be crucial as the team seeks to achieve new heights on the European stage.
