Anfield Stadium
Manchester United triumphed over Liverpool with a 2-1 victory at Anfield, marking their first win at the iconic stadium since January 2016. This victory also signifies the first time United has achieved back-to-back wins in the Premier League under head coach Ruben Amorim, who took charge at Old Trafford in November 2024. The win has propelled United to ninth place in the league, just two points shy of fourth-placed Liverpool. With this momentum, there is renewed optimism at Old Trafford that this victory against the reigning English champions could be the catalyst for a successful season under Amorim’s leadership. Gary Neville has expressed confidence that European football is within reach for United this season, setting a top-six finish as a realistic target.
Gary Neville said: “They’ve just gone into the top half of the table, to ninth, and I think if they win next week, they’ve got to start thinking of pushing up the league. Because they’ve got to get to a point whereby there’s stability at the club, the only way there’s going to be stability is through winning football matches. I think Manchester United have got a top six squad, particularly when you know that they haven’t got European football, and they haven’t got the Carabao Cup now. If you look at the four or five players they’ve got up front in Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, and Bruno Fernandes behind them. And then the centre-backs they’ve got – Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, they should be able to get a top six finish with the free weeks out of that squad.”
Neville emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum from Sunday’s win into their upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion. He highlighted the significance of the victory at Anfield, noting that winning at such a challenging ground is a remarkable achievement for any team. Neville’s analysis underscores the potential within United’s squad, especially with key players like Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bruno Fernandes leading the charge. The absence of European commitments this season could provide United with the necessary focus and rest to achieve a top-six league finish.
This victory not only boosts United’s league position but also instills a sense of belief that Amorim’s tenure can turn around after a challenging start. As United prepares to host Brighton next Saturday, the team will aim to build on their recent success and continue their ascent up the Premier League table.
