Enzo Maresca
In a thrilling Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Liverpool, the Blues emerged victorious with a last-gasp winner, overshadowed by the disciplinary action taken against Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. The match saw Cody Gakpo equalize for Liverpool after Moises Caicedo’s opener for Chelsea, only for young Blues star Estevao Willian to secure the win in the 96th minute. However, it was Maresca’s touchline antics that grabbed headlines, as he received a second yellow card for his exuberant celebrations, resulting in a dismissal and subsequent disciplinary measures.
The FA stated: “Enzo Maresca has been given a one-match touchline ban and an £8,000 fine for misconduct during the Premier League game between Chelsea and Liverpool on Saturday 4 October. It was alleged the manager acted in an improper manner and/or used abusing and/or insulting words and/or behaviour during the fixture, which led to his dismissal round the 96th minute. Enzo Maresca has subsequently admitted the charge and accepted the standard penalty.”
Maresca’s dismissal means he will be absent from the touchline for Chelsea’s upcoming match against Nottingham Forest. The incident has put a spotlight on the manager’s conduct and the FA’s disciplinary processes. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s manager Arne Slot expressed his disappointment following the match, reflecting on the team’s recent form and missed opportunities.
Slot said: “Another disappointing loss. That’s clear. But not similar to the Palace game where in the first half I think we played not our best football but still were able to create three big chances. I think there was a period of the game where I felt, ‘Now we’re going to win it.’ We came a lot of times very close with chances but also with moments where we had four-versus-three in our favour, not outplaying it well enough in the last pass. And in the last 10 minutes, it was an end-to-end game, both teams could have won it. We didn’t and Chelsea did.”
The defeat marks Liverpool’s third consecutive loss, including a narrow defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League. As the Premier League resumes after the international break, Liverpool will aim to regain momentum and close the gap on Arsenal. The Reds are set to host Manchester United in a highly anticipated clash, with Sky Sports broadcasting an increased number of live Premier League games this season.
