Monchi, the former president of football operations at Aston Villa, has opened up about his experiences in football negotiations, particularly highlighting his interactions with Tottenham Hotspur’s Daniel Levy. Monchi, who also spent over two decades at Sevilla, discussed the challenges and intricacies involved in dealing with Levy, known for his formidable negotiating tactics.
Monchi said: “There were many. I always say Daniel Levy, possibly one of the hardest to negotiate with.”
During Monchi’s tenure at Aston Villa, there were notable transfer negotiations with Tottenham Hotspur involving players such as Jacob Ramsey and Giovani Lo Celso. The history of deals between Monchi and Levy is extensive, dating back to when Spurs triggered the £8 million release clause of Sevilla’s centre-back Federico Fazio in 2014. Additionally, Tottenham sold striker Frederic Kanoute to Sevilla for approximately £5.5 million, yielding a £2 million profit from the £3.5 million paid to West Ham United in 2003. Another significant transaction involved midfielder Didier Zokora, who moved to Sevilla in 2009, with a reported £25 million release clause included in the deal.
In July 2021, Monchi was instrumental in negotiating a player-plus-cash swap deal that brought Bryan Gil to Tottenham. These transactions illustrate the complex and strategic nature of negotiations between the two clubs, often involving substantial sums and intricate clauses.
Daniel Levy said: “The perception and the reality, I can tell you, can be very different. Best negotiator? I think that’s just false. There’s no such thing. You can be good, fair, hard. I don’t think anyone can define themselves as the best.”
Levy, who stepped down as Tottenham chairman in early September, has been known for his tough stance in negotiations, a reputation that Monchi acknowledges. However, Levy himself has refuted claims of being the best negotiator, emphasizing the subjective nature of such assessments.
The interactions between Monchi and Levy underscore the complexities of football negotiations, where strategic planning and tactical acumen are crucial. These dealings have not only shaped the careers of players involved but have also highlighted the intricate dynamics of modern football transfers.
