Dominic Calvert Lewis
Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has come to the defense of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, arguing that the striker’s contributions to the team should not be judged solely on his goal tally. Despite recent missed opportunities, Calvert-Lewin’s overall gameplay, including his hold-up play and ability to offload the ball, has been instrumental for Leeds United.
Jermaine Beckford said: “I genuinely hate putting dates and games as timelines [on scoring], because these players offer so much more than just the goals. Dominic holds the ball up, he’s pinning the defender, he’s got another one closing him down. He sets the ball off to Ethan Ampadu or somebody else in the middle to spread the ball out to the other side. The ball gets crossed in and somebody else scores a goal – it’s not Dominic that scored, but Dominic has been a key vital part of that machine, of that situation, to score the goal. Now, if he does that in two, three, four, five, six games in a row and doesn’t score, are we going to judge him on that or not scoring? Or are we going to judge him on his overall gameplay, on what he offers the team, the outlet, the positivity, the energy, pinning the centre-halves, the occupying the centre-halves? That’s what we’ve got to look at. We can’t just judge him on the goals that he scores or doesn’t score, in my opinion.”
Beckford’s comments highlight the importance of recognizing a player’s comprehensive contributions on the field. Calvert-Lewin has been actively involved in creating scoring opportunities for his teammates, as evidenced by his role in Brenden Aaronson’s shot that led to Noah Okafor’s equalizer against Spurs. While the striker has faced criticism for not converting chances, his ability to hold up the ball and distribute it effectively has been a crucial element of Leeds’ attacking play.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke also refrained from criticizing Calvert-Lewin, acknowledging that the striker could have scored more goals in recent matches against Bournemouth and Tottenham. Despite squandering opportunities, the focus remains on the positive aspects of his game, which have impressed both fans and pundits alike.
The statistics from Leeds’ recent matches further illustrate the team’s attacking potential. In the last two games, Leeds has managed to take 35 shots, with 12 of them on target, resulting in three goals. Beckford emphasized the need for patience and persistence, urging fans to support the team as they continue to create scoring opportunities.
Beckford added: “The most important thing now from being a fan is that we all get behind and stay behind these boys because they’re getting the chances. It’s frustrating but we’re never going to score every single opportunity. We don’t have Erling Haaland at the club who is an absolute goal machine. But what we do have are fully fit centre-forwards who are capable of scoring a lot of goals. You know, it’s just patience and persistence. That’s all it is.”
As Leeds United continues to develop its attacking strategy, the emphasis remains on supporting players like Calvert-Lewin, who contribute significantly to the team’s overall performance beyond just scoring goals.
