Connor Wickham
Connor Wickham, the seasoned centre forward, has embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining a club in the United Arab Emirates. Wickham, who had been unattached since his brief stint with Charlton Athletic in 2024, has been actively seeking new opportunities. During his time at Charlton, he managed to score one goal in four appearances. Recently, Wickham participated in the PFA’s Free Agent training camp, designed to provide players with a professional environment as they navigate the search for new clubs. His impressive performance for a PFA XI, where he scored a remarkable halfway-line goal against a Manchester United youth side, caught significant attention.
Connor Wickham said: “I’m still only 31 really. It feels like I’ve been around for ages. I still want to push myself to be at a good level, at the top level. I’ve still got a few years left where I feel like I can still provide that. I’m just going to keep training, stay fit. I’ve had options, but I feel like I want to challenge myself. I don’t want to get to the end of my career and be like, ‘I wish I did this, I wish I did that’. At some point, I’ve always thought one thing I would have loved to have done is go and play abroad. It could have happened a couple of times during my career. At the time, I wasn’t really that open to it. But as I’ve got to where I am now, where I still am, it would be nice when you see players now playing abroad, and the different cultures, the different fans, and different life experiences as well. I’m open, but I’m ready.”
Wickham’s move to the Middle East marks another step in his diverse and itinerant career. Over the years, he has been part of several clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United, Crystal Palace, Preston North End, MK Dons, Forest Green Rovers, Cardiff City, and Charlton Athletic. His decision to join a UAE club aligns with his long-held aspiration to experience playing abroad, a sentiment he expressed in a recent interview with Sky Sports News.
The 31-year-old forward has been a familiar name in English football, known for his physical presence and goal-scoring ability. His latest move is expected to bring new challenges and opportunities, allowing him to explore different football cultures and environments. As Wickham continues to pursue his career goals, his journey in the UAE will undoubtedly add another intriguing chapter to his professional life.
