Erling Haaland
Manchester City found themselves in a frustrating position after drawing 2-2 with Monaco in their recent Champions League encounter. Despite Erling Haaland’s impressive first-half performance, which saw him score twice, City could not maintain their lead. Monaco managed to equalize through a controversial penalty decision, awarded via VAR, which left Haaland and his team visibly frustrated.
Erling Haaland said: “We did something unnecessary in the second half. We didn’t play good enough so we don’t deserve to win. We need more energy, to get back to more like the first half, we dominated much more. In the second half they took the lead much more.”
Haaland continued: “If you kick someone in the face I guess it’s a penalty. I don’t know. I didn’t see it.”
He added: “I still think I’m involved in the game, doing movements and giving space to the others. You can be involved in the game many other ways. I did my job in the first half, I didn’t in the second.”
The match started brightly for Manchester City, with Haaland scoring two goals in the first half, either side of a remarkable strike from Monaco’s Jordan Teze. City’s dominance in the initial 45 minutes was evident, as they caused numerous problems for the Monaco defense. However, their inability to maintain the momentum in the second half proved costly.
The turning point came when Monaco was awarded a penalty following a VAR review. Nico Gonzalez was penalized for a high foot on Eric Dier, and Dier himself converted the penalty to level the score. Despite City’s protests, the decision stood, and the match ended in a stalemate.
Haaland’s performance, particularly in the first half, continued his remarkable scoring streak, with the Norwegian striker now having scored in eight consecutive games for club and country. Although he had limited touches during the first half, his impact was undeniable, showcasing his ability to influence the game beyond just scoring goals.
This result leaves Manchester City with work to do in their Champions League campaign, as they look to address the issues that led to their second-half decline against Monaco.
