Nuno Espirito Santo
West Ham United has appointed Nuno Espirito Santo as their new head coach following the dismissal of Graham Potter. The announcement came just hours after Potter’s departure, with Nuno stepping in to lead the team, which currently sits 19th in the Premier League table. The Hammers have struggled this season, losing four of their five matches and exiting the Carabao Cup at the hands of Wolves. Nuno, who was recently let go by Nottingham Forest, now faces the challenge of revitalizing a team in turmoil.
Nuno Espirito Santo said: “I’m trying to, as soon as possible, know all the players. I think I know them better than they know me, because it’s like that. We are coaches and we try to take all the info that we can about the players. Many of them, we faced each other before and now it’s preparing for the game, a tough game against Everton.”
Nuno Espirito Santo added: “Now it’s a new beginning for everybody. It’s a new process that we really have to know, and we find out who we are and what we want to be. First of all, we have to realise who we are, and then we can create an identity. But first of all, we have to know each other really, really well. The supporters are very important, very important. That’s why I truly believe what we want to achieve is a platform. Now is not the moment to ask the fans. Now is the moment to deliver to the fans. But we have to achieve this bond first.”
Nuno’s appointment marks West Ham’s fourth managerial change in just 16 months, following the tenures of David Moyes, Julen Lopetegui, and Graham Potter. The Portuguese coach previously led Nottingham Forest to European competition for the first time in nearly three decades, before parting ways with the club due to a disagreement with owner Evangelos Marinakis. His last match in charge was a 3-0 victory over West Ham, which remains the Hammers’ only win this season.
The situation at West Ham is further complicated by a growing discontent among the fanbase towards owner David Sullivan, especially following the controversial handling of Potter’s sacking. Former West Ham striker Tony Cottee expressed his frustration on social media, criticizing the club’s management and calling for a change in ownership.
Nuno faces the daunting task of securing West Ham’s first win at the London Stadium since February and restoring faith among the supporters. As he prepares for his first match against Everton, the new head coach emphasizes the importance of building a strong identity and fostering a connection with the fans.
