Bryan Mbeumo
Manchester United’s recent clash saw a controversial decision involving former Wolves player, Nathan Collins, which has ignited discussions among fans and pundits alike. The incident occurred when Collins was adjudged to have pulled down his former teammate inside the penalty area. Referee Craig Pawson issued a yellow card, while Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Andy Madley, supported by assistant Nicholas Hopton, reviewed the situation at Stockley Park. Despite the review, it was deemed not to be a sending-off offense.
Premier League Match Centre explained: “The referee’s call of penalty was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Collins deemed to have pulled Mbeumo back. VAR also checked the referee’s call of yellow card to Collins – and deemed that Mbeumo wasn’t in control of the ball.”
Gerson expressed his disagreement on Instagram, stating: “This is absolutely a red card for denial of obvious goalscoring opportunity. How this was only a yellow card and penalty, I don’t understand. Let me go ahead and dispel some myths, double jeopardy, you can’t give a red card in a penalty kick. Absolutely, you can. The laws have changed over the years, it used to be the case you couldn’t, now you can.”
He further elaborated: “The second thing, what are DOGSO (Denial of Goal Scoring Opportunity) conditions, so distance, absolutely met, number of defenders, there’s no one between the foul and the goal, and then you got direction, he’s right in the middle of the field, he’s going towards goal and then, likely to control. That’s right, you don’t need to have control of the ball for it to be a red card, for DOGSO opportunity.”
The decision has sparked a debate over the interpretation of the rules, particularly concerning the Denial of Goal Scoring Opportunity (DOGSO) criteria. Gerson’s comments highlighted the evolving nature of football regulations and the complexities involved in making such critical decisions. The incident has also raised questions about the consistency of VAR decisions, especially in high-stakes matches.
United’s defeat marks their third in the league this season, adding pressure on manager Ruben Amorim. The match’s outcome and the contentious decision have further fueled discussions about the team’s current form and strategic direction. As the Premier League season progresses, fans and analysts will be keenly observing how these decisions impact the league’s competitive landscape.
