The Extraordinary Life of Jack Charlton From World Cup Glory to Newcastles Dugout

Jack Charlton, a football legend and World Cup winner, carved out a unique legacy both on and off the pitch. Known for his managerial achievements with the Republic of Ireland and his tenure at Newcastle United, Charlton was also a passionate hunter and fisherman. His love for traditional country pursuits often drew attention, sometimes controversially, from animal and bird protection activists. This attention led to a dramatic incident in February 1985, when Newcastle United faced West Ham at Upton Park.

Paul Ferris said: “On the morning of the game two senior detectives with the Met Police interrupted our team meeting to tell us of the threat to Big Jack’s life. Broken glass had been scattered on the pitch in protest and the talk was that the game could be off. Eventually we got the all-clear to travel across London but the gaffer had to lie out of sight in the isle of the coach as it weaved its way through busy streets.”

This extraordinary episode is detailed in Paul Ferris’ new book, “Once Upon A Toon.” Ferris, a former Newcastle player, recounts how the game was nearly postponed due to a threat on Charlton’s life. The situation was taken “extremely seriously” by the police, highlighting the intense scrutiny Charlton faced during his managerial career.

Paul Ferris continued: “Early on West Ham attacked down our left side. I was in the dug-out sitting behind Jack when all of a sudden he stepped outside and started gesturing towards the sky. I took my eyes off the game and started looking towards the sky as well. A flock of geese were flying in perfect V formation over the head of our hunting, shooting and fishing manager. He stretched his arms in open exasperation. ‘Would you look at that? Where’s my f*****g gun when I need it?'”

Charlton’s tenure at Newcastle was marked by memorable moments, both on and off the pitch. His management style and personality left a lasting impression on players and fans alike. Ferris, who scored his only goal for Newcastle under Charlton’s management, shares anecdotes that capture the essence of Charlton’s character and his impact on the team.

Paul Ferris, a multi-talented individual, has served Newcastle United in various capacities, from player to physio, and as part of Alan Shearer’s management team. His new book, published by Bloomsbury Sport, is a humorous and insightful look into the world of Newcastle United during Charlton’s era. The book launch, featuring appearances by Alan Shearer and Steve Harper, underscores Ferris’ respected status within the football community.
