John Stones Future Uncertain as Everton Consider Shock Return

John Stones, the former Everton defender, is reportedly being considered for a return to Goodison Park as his future at Manchester City remains uncertain. Stones, who joined Everton from Barnsley in 2013 under David Moyes, has enjoyed a successful stint at Manchester City, winning numerous titles. However, with Pep Guardiola looking to revamp his squad after a below-par season, Stones could find himself surplus to requirements. The 31-year-old, who has a year left on his contract, has only started nine Premier League matches this season, prompting speculation about his next move.

Graeme Bailey said: “John Stones’ future at Manchester City is far from certain. City are planning a number of new arrivals this summer, and we are going to see a number of changes, and that means some of the biggest names from the last decade or so could and will depart. Kyle Walker left in January, and we know Kevin De Bruyne is going; things are changing. Stones has interest from the Saudi Pro League, but in England, there are clubs who would be willing to take him, including West Ham and his former club Everton to name but two. The issue is with his injury record, less than 10 starts in the last two seasons, it would be a risk for anyone. If he does indeed hit the open market, I believe that Everton would be open to the prospect. Stones is settled in the North West, so it could be an option. But we have to see the plans new City sporting director Hugo Viana puts into practice, but the defence is a major area they want to work on.”

Despite the potential interest, Everton’s centre-back situation remains complex. James Tarkowski has been leading the team in the absence of club captain Seamus Coleman, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury. Tarkowski, like Stones, has a contract expiring in just over a year and is currently recovering from surgery, which may affect his pre-season preparation. Meanwhile, Michael Keane is expected to leave Everton after eight years when his contract ends this season.

A senior club insider from Everton has stated that there is currently no firm interest in Stones. However, with the club’s defensive options in flux, a move for the former Everton man could be on the cards if he becomes available. Stones’ familiarity with the club and his settled life in the North West make a return to Goodison Park a plausible option.
