Manchester City striker Niall Quinn reckoned that Manchester City was going to get a great player if they could manage to price Middlesbrough’s Irish International defender, Alan Kernaghan. Middlesbrough had already rejected a Ā£1.5 million bid from City for the player who had just signed a three-year deal at Ayresome Park that summer. City boss Brian Horton was mulling over increasing the bid for the player but cited lack of funds.

Nial Quinn said, ā€œIf City buys Alan Kernaghan, they would be buying an emerging international player, we saw on Wednesday for Ireland that Alan is coming of age as a quality player.ā€

Brian Horton said ā€œI’ve offered a lot of money already. Kernaghan is a good player but our squad is lacking in depth and I may not be able to go any further for just one player.ā€
