Premier League Museum

In this blog series – “What Happened Today”, we are going to revive some of the moments from past which will revive moments of the golden history of the league.

Monday’s papers in the UK covered the only Premier League match played on Sunday where ex Evertonian Graeme Sharp’s solitary goal helped Oldham beat Everton, Arsenal striker Ian Wright was again in trouble with complaints about crowd provocation by Chelsea, Kenny Dalglish celebrates his one year anniversary at Blackburn Rovers as the manager and Leeds angry at the Football Association over lack of backing in the European Cup reinstatement row.

The Dean Saunders syndrome was spreading quickly across all teams as many former players of the clubs were coming back to punish them in the previous few weeks of the Premier League matches. After Saunders’ two goals inflicted defeat on Liverpool a few weeks ago, the previous week it was the turn of the Blue side of Merseyside who faced Oldham Athletic with a string of Ex Evertonians in the squad. Ian Marshall, Mike Milligan and Graeme Sharp all lined up against their ex-team and it was Sharp who in the end secured all three points for Oldham.

Arsenal striker Ian Wright was once again in the news after the reports of an official complaint from Chelsea emerged about the Arsenal striker making rude gestures to the away crowd after the winning goal in two sides clashes the previous weekend. It was the second time in a month that Wright was subject to provocation allegations as the earlier previous month he allegedly made V signs to Oldham crowds which prompted an angry response by the fans and a coin was thrown on Wright. Even though at that point in time no evidence was in place, the Premier League authorities were likely to take the incident very seriously as Ian Wright’s agent Jerome Anderson suspected that repeated complaints about his client were part of a malicious attack.

As Blackburn Rovers went into the international break top of the table, their manager Kenny Dalglish was full of praise of not only the squad but of the complete club as he was about to celebrate his one year anniversary of taking charge at Ewood Park. In that year he got Blackburn promoted in the top division and then they were top of the table in the premier league as well. He said “I’m perfectly happy with the way things have gone. I have gone on record to show the players and staff’s application, the contribution of Jack Walter in terms of both finance and time and the fans who come and watch us.”

Leeds United was set to clash with the Premier League and FA authorities over the later’s failure to back Leeds’ case for European Cup reinstatement. Although Leeds did gain the first-round replay against Stuttgart but they felt that they had a chance to throw the German side out of the competition if sufficient backing from the FA was available. The German FA officials were present at the hearing and the Leeds Managing Director Bill Fotherby was furious of the fact that no one from the English FA helped them out in the case.
