Thursday papers in the UK covered the latest set of financial results from Manchester United, Red Devils’ star player Denis Irwin was set for a spell at sidelines, another dismal display from Everton brought their manager Howard Kendall on the brink and the turning fortunes at Nottingham Forest according to their player Kingsley Black.

Manchester United was set to announce a profit of more than £5 million to its national shareholders at their annual general meeting on November 20. Despite the recession United’s profit for the previous financial year, ending in July was healthy. The directors appropriated £250000 to the transfer fee reserve. Since the year’s end, the club had spent £1 million on new players, mainly their acquisition of Dion Dublin. In addition, players were transferred out of the club for a total of £925000.

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson feared that his star player Denis Irwin could be out for a long period after he was substituted in the 21st minute following a hamstring injury in their cup match against Aston Villa. Irwin said post-match “I felt a little twinge in the hamstring and decided to take protective action. I really can’t say how bad the hamstring is so I don’t know how I’ll be fixed for the upcoming matches,” This injury could also jeopardize his spot in the Irish national team that was to face Spain in the next international break.

Pressure mounted further on Everton boss Howard Kendall after his side played out a goalless draw against Wimbledon in the coca-cola cup. Continuing the trend of empty stands and lack of goals, the match was played in front of fewer than 10000 fans at Goodison Park as the Merseyside outfit failed to break down a Wimbledon side in a match that had very little action. Everton then had not scored a goal at their home ground since they scored against the Second Division side, Rotherham.

Nottingham Forest player Kingsley Black was convinced that his side’s poor run of results was about to end and soon they would play their way out of premier league trouble. Forest was then rooted to the bottom of the premier league table and their legendary manager Brian Clough was facing severe pressure from media and fans. The defense was very leaky and it was conceding at an average two goals per match whereas the side had very few goals in them. But with four points in the previous two premier league matches and victory over Crewe in the coca-cola cup had lifted the spirits at Forest.
