Souness also saw him play when Norway faced England at Wembley a few weeks earlier. Bjornebye was flying to England to complete his £50000 move to Anfield. Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson tried to defuse the tension before his side faced Aston Villa where he was set to come up against Paul Mcgrath, his ex-player and someone who was in controversy following Ferguson’s latest book. Mcgrath was so furious about Ferguson’s remarks about him that he was planning to sue the United boss. Ferguson tried to calm the situation down and said “In 18 years as a manager I have never criticized a player in public before, but my book set out to describe my six-year of management at Old Trafford and unavoidably I had to deal with several controversial issues. Paul was one of them and I had to describe certain events to explain why I let a great player leave Old Trafford.”

Eric Thorstvedt, the Tottenham Hotspur keeper and a Norwegian international was worried about his future after having not featured for the North London club in three months resulting in his national team goalkeeping position coming under jeopardy. Thorstvedt had not played for Spurs since their 5-0 defeat at Leeds in August and he said “It has been a difficult time for me playing in the reserves. The Norway manager says he wants everyone to play first-team football and really that’s all any player wants to do.”
