Thursday papers in the UK covered the only premier league match played on the previous day where a scrappy victory from Nottingham Forest gave a huge sigh of relief to their under-pressure boss Brian Clough, they also looked ahead to the blockbuster clash between Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, the latest on the sponsorship deal impasse and Liverpool’s attempt to help out their fans by subsiding selected match tickets.

Kingsley Black’s second-half winner sank out of touch Middlesborough and gave struggling Nottingham Forest their first win in 11 premier league matches the previous night. They suffered a blow before the game when Robbie Mustoe became their fifth injured midfielder when forced to drop out after a training injury and 18-year-old Irish lad Graham Kavanagh was called in for his debut. Brian Clough praised his much-criticized defense and said “Our back four got us through the game. They earned their corn against Middlesborough and that’s why we came off with a win.”

Kenny Dalglish’s high riding Blackburn Rovers had a chance to regain the leadership of the premier league when they would meet Manchester United at Ewood Park later that week. A win for Rovers over their Lancashire rivals that they had outstripped in terms of both spending power and results in the previous few months would see them leapfrog over Norwich back to the top, who was set to play Liverpool at Anfield one day later. United, on the other hand, were lying seventh on the table, seven points behind their opponents.

Liverpool was set to help their fans beat the recession by cutting ticket prices for many premier league and continental matches, starting from their second leg of the European Cup winners cup tie against Spartak Moscow. Seat prices were to be reduced by 15 pc to £10 in an attempt to encourage more fans to Anfield after a disappointing attendance at many matches that season including a crowd of only 12000 for their last European home game with Apollon Limassol.

Eight clubs joined forces to block the multi-million-pound title sponsorship deal involving Bass. The clubs prefer to do their own thing with an advertising company, prompting a Crystal Palace walkout. The November 2 meeting of clubs had been postponed with premier league chief executive Ricky Parry trying to repair relations in conjunction with Liverpool and Manchester United. Whatever happened to the five year deal with BSkyB was then worth £200 million compared to the original £304 million forecasts.
