  • Blackburn Rovers’ shock defeat at home against Tottenham

The goals had suddenly dried up for Alan Shearer as he fired another blank for Blackburn Rovers. The Lancashire team had then gone four matches without a goal and against the North London side, they paid the penalty for that as Tottenham won at Ewood Park sending their rivals Arsenal on top. Spurs took the lead via David Howells’ goal, who stabbed home from four yards. Teddy Sheringham converted from the penalty spot.

Two fine goals from Israeli International Striker Ronny Rosenthal and Ian Rush’s 200th league goal helped Liverpool shake off their midweek European disappointment with a convincing 4-1 win over Middlesborough.

Dalian Atkinson plundered his tenth goal of the season and piled more misery on Manchester United by beating them second time in 10 days. In front of the biggest crowd that in England season in front of 39000 fans Villa continued their unbeaten run to 12 matches and mounted more problems for Manchester United whose manager admitted that lack of goals was a big concern for them. “We may have to do something about it. I believe there is money available and I would expect support if I want to buy it. But as we all know the options are not great.”

The wise old head and vibrant skills of Ray Wilkins totally eclipsed sad Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. The former England midfielder, then 36, ran the game and scored a superb goal as Rangers recovered from the previous week’s defeat at Villa Park to rekindle their championship hopes. Earlier Martin Allen saw a 23rd-minute long-range effort take a wicked deflection off Brian Mcallister to loop over a surprised Segers and into the net.
