Brendan Rodgers has told James Maddison that Leicester City is the perfect place for him to improve his game amid contract talks with the midfielder. The City manager is hopeful that Maddison will soon put pen to paper on a new deal, with news of talks first emerging last November. The 23-year-old’s current contract, signed when he arrived at the King Power Stadium from Norwich in 2018, runs until 2023, but his importance to Rodgers’ team and his rise to full England international status prompted City to begin discussions over fresh terms. A new contract would also aid the club in a battle to keep Maddison from interested top-six rivals, albeit links to Manchester United have died down with the Red Devils seemingly turning their attention to Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

Brendan Rodgers said “James is a very important player for us. I see his development here. We’ll move to a new training facility and he’s got every condition to improve his game. He is that type of player that wants to get better. In my time, I’ve seen him develop and grow both in his personality and game. He has a really good relationship with the club, with the players, with the supporters. I’m hopeful that at some point in the future we can tie him down for that bit longer.”
