After Jurgen Klopp controversially criticised Chelsea’s summer spending, stating Liverpool is a “different kind of club” to those “owned by countries, owned by oligarchs”, Jamie Carragher has spoken about the topic as well. The former Reds defender supported managers who spend big, including Pep Guardiola, who once again invested heavily in his squad in the shape of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake, stating that it is one of the hardest things to do in the modern game.

Jamie Carragher said “Sir Alex Ferguson used to say the hardest thing in football is managing change, There is a risk – I would even call it bravery – in doing so much at once. Not all managers are prepared to do it, fearing it will go wrong and they will be remembered for squandering millions with poor judgement. Managers who buy big are prepared to put their reputation on the line. That is why I never understand why any coach is sneered at for spending money, whether it is Jose Mourinho in 2004, Pep Guardiola in 2017, or even Klopp when he paid so much for Van Dijk.”
