Toti Gomes was left perplexed after Wolverhampton Wanderers were controversially denied a late winner in Saturday’s FA Cup tie. The officials apparently didn’t have the correct VAR camera angle to determine whether Matheus was in an offside position. Julen Lopetegui insists that one of Wolves’ “tactical cameras”, which captured the whole situation, proves that Matheus was onside and that the goal should have stood. Wolves must now fit an FA Cup replay against Liverpool into an already hectic fixture schedule. After being denied his first Wolves goal, Toti took aim at the officials.

Toti Gomez said: “At the end I tried to speak with them and they said it was offside by a little bit, but I don’t understand how. At the end I saw the replay and still don’t understand how it wasn’t a goal. They should have done better. In this type of moment, they help the big teams a little bit and for us that’s not good. Sometimes these mistakes help the big teams. It’s frustrating because we fight for a good result and these small things make a difference in the end. I’m still proud of the team because we gave everything until the end, it was a good game.”

Toti was making his first start under Lopetegui last night in a much-changed team from the Premier League match at Villa Park in midweek. The Portuguese defender, who turns 24 next week, has appeared off the bench in each of Wolves’ three Premier League games under Lopetegui.

Toti Gomez said: “As a team you can see the environment in the changing room has changed since he came in. He’s brought something different and everyone is working well in training. You can see from our performances lately that we’ve been improving a lot and we still have more to show.”
