Steven Gerrard says he’s “worried” by the knee injury Boubacar Kamara sustained during Villa’s 1-0 win over Southampton. The French international was forced off before half-time after appearing to jarr his knee during a challenge with Mohamed Elyounoussi in the middle of midfield. Kamara was today recalled to the France squad but now looks for a spell on the sidelines with Gerrard hoping his summer signing will return for Leeds United in a fortnight. In an update to supporters,

Steven Gerrard said: “I’m worried about it! It seems like every time we get three points it comes with a cost. We’ll scan him in the next couple of days but, yeah, I’m worried about it.”

Villa, of course, lost Diego Carlos to a long-term Achilles injury during Villa’s one and only other victory this season in the win over Everton. On Villa’s win, though, which has lifted them to 13th,

Steven Gerrard added: “It’s a big victory. It wasn’t pretty or stylish but, with where we were in the league, we knew we had to do it in a pragmatic way. I’m really proud of the boys’ effort, application and commitment. We played better than we did last time. In football, you have to grind and fight and be committed and we worked hard today. We will get better in terms of style and possession and that will come but tonight was about the points. We had to back up our performance against Manchester City and there were a lot of eyes on us from the TV but we did it.”
