Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not expecting reassurance from the Manchester United board amid uncertainty over his role. Although Solskjaer’s situation already seems untenable, he insists the crux of his conversations with the board this week were not about his future.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said “I’ve had communication with the board and I don’t expect them to come and give me assurances. When you have a performance and a spell like we’ve had, that’s not what I call about and say. My job is to put things right and that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m not here to ask for assurances. It’s been a very difficult week. I’ve not had a problem sleeping because when you go to bed at night if you’ve done all your work then you don’t have much thinking there. You need time to have your decision-making and you need to do that when you’re staying awake. I’ve slept okay but It’s been a hard week in that respect. We’ve worked as a staff and the players and the work they’ve done has been really good.”

Liverpool, Leeds and City fans have all chanted ‘Ole’s at the wheel’ over the last week and Solskjaer seemed unaware that the supporters of United’s biggest rivals had aired their sardonic support for him.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said “When Leeds, City and Liverpool fans are singing? I don’t think I’ve ever been affected by any opposition fans really either as a player, a coach or a manager,”

The United board considered dismissing Solskjaer in the wake of the galling 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool on Sunday but the lack of a succession plan granted the United manager a stay of execution. United have away games against Tottenham in the Premier League and Atalanta in the Champions League, as well as the visit of Manchester City in the season’s first derby, before the November international fortnight, which is often a period where a club decides to sack their manager.
