Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Aaron Wan-Bissaka showed his inexperience with the manner of his dismissal in the 2-1 Champions League defeat to Young Boys. Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card in the 35th minute after he miscontrolled the ball and then fouled Christopher Martins with a high tackle. United failed to register an attempt at goal after Wan-Bissaka’s expulsion and conceded the equaliser in the 66th minute before Jesse Lingard’s blind backpass was intercepted by Jordan Siebatcheu to slot in a 95th-minute winner.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “I can understand why he gives it. Aaron takes a touch that goes too far, it’s never a dangerous tackle because he hits him in the front of his foot. We saw with Harvey Elliott you sometimes can see bad injuries [but] it was never reckless or malicious. Maybe inexperience to go through without the ball but the boy wasn’t going to be injured. And it makes it difficult after that with 10 men. Aaron’s normally a very, very astute tackler, one of the best in the world.”
Wan-Bissaka will be suspended for the visit of Villarreal on September 30. Diogo Dalot, who came on in the first-half in Bern, is the natural replacement for Wan-Bissaka at right-back. United lost three of their six Champions League group games last season but only one of them came in their first four matches. Villarreal beat United in the Europa League final in May and Atalanta, United’s other group stage opponents, have qualified for the Champions League in successive seasons by finishing third in Serie A.
